United States head coach Mauricio Pochettino expressed that the 2-1 victory over Guatemala in Wednesday’s CONCACAF Gold Cup semi-finals had a distinct away-game feel, noting that American fans could take inspiration from the fervour of the Guatemalan supporters.
The encounter attracted over 22,000 fans in St. Louis, with a significant number cheering for Guatemala, who provided unwavering support throughout the match, even as Diego Luna netted two early goals for the US, securing their place in the final against Mexico this Sunday.
“The supporters of Guatemala, I must say, were incredible. It really felt like playing away from home. This was beneficial for our players as the atmosphere was something we hadn’t anticipated,” remarked Pochettino, the former manager of Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea, during a press conference.
The Argentine coach expressed his hope for a similar level of enthusiasm from American fans during next year’s World Cup, which will be held in the United States.
“The energy was astonishing. That’s what football is all about. When we speak of the bond between the team and the supporters, that’s the connection we aspire to witness at the World Cup. It’s the kind of connection that lifts you up,” he pointed out.
“When we discuss culture, that’s what it embodies… witnessing Guatemala’s resilience and the way their fans conduct themselves teaches us valuable lessons here in our country,” he added.
Pochettino remarked that in many nations, football matches represent far more than mere sporting events.
“In other countries, you play to survive. You’re playing for sustenance, for pride… it’s not merely about enjoyment or heading home to relax after the game,” he explained.
“Once our squad begins to embrace this mindset, I believe we have vast potential to improve,” he concluded.
