The Royal Dutch Football Association (KNVB) revealed on Wednesday that a total of 26 refereeing errors occurred during the 2024/25 Eredivisie season, despite the use of VAR.
Raymond van Meenen, the KNVB’s head of refereeing, shared these figures during a press conference at the association’s headquarters located in Zeist.
Van Meenen specified that these errors took place in scenarios where VAR is able to intervene, including instances of direct red cards, penalty decisions, and goal assessments.
This year’s total of 26 mishaps marks a notable decrease from the previous season, in which the KNVB acknowledged 37 refereeing errors.

“While any mistake is one too many,” Van Meenen remarked, “It’s important to recognise that football is inherently interpretative. It’s unrealistic to expect total error-free officiating, yet our goal is to continue decreasing the number of such incidents.”
Throughout the 306 Eredivisie matches last season, a total of 107 VAR checks were conducted, with the VAR and on-field officials reaching a correct decision in 81 cases.
Addressing Protests
Additionally, Van Meenen stated that referees in the Eredivisie will adopt a more assertive stance towards player protests.
“We will be implementing a stricter policy. It’s crucial for the integrity of football that the elite level sets a positive example.”
The Eredivisie season is set to commence on Friday, 8th August.
