Premier League champions Liverpool have unveiled a series of adjustments to Arne Slot’s coaching team, prominently featuring the appointment of Giovanni van Bronckhorst as Slot’s new assistant coach.
The 50-year-old Van Bronckhorst most recently held the position of head coach at Turkish Super Lig club Besiktas before his exit in November 2024. Prior to his tenure in Turkey, the former Arsenal, Barcelona, and Rangers left-back managed at Feyenoord, Rangers, and the Chinese club Guangzhou R&F.
During his time at Feyenoord, the 106-times capped Dutch international led the club to its first Eredivisie title in 17 years, as well as securing two KNVB Beker trophies. He also celebrated winning the Scottish Cup with Rangers and reached the UEFA Europa League final in the 2021-22 season with them, before clinching the Turkish Super Cup with Besiktas in 2024.
Van Bronckhorst takes over from John Heitinga on Slot’s coaching staff, as the former Everton defender stepped down in May to become head coach at Ajax.
Changes in Goalkeeping
In addition to Van Bronckhorst, Slot has enlisted Spanish goalkeeping coach Xavi Valero following the exits of Fabian Otte and former World Cup champion Claudio Taffarel.
Valero previously worked at Liverpool under Rafael Benitez and followed him to Internazionale, Chelsea, Napoli, and Real Madrid. His last role was at West Ham, where he joined in 2018 from Hebei China Fortune.
Otte departs Liverpool after just one season, while Taffarel bids farewell to Anfield after four years.
The Premier League champions are set to commence their season on August 10th, facing Crystal Palace in the Community Shield match. Liverpool’s Premier League journey begins on August 15th with an away fixture against Bournemouth.
