Serhou Guirassy’s two goals propelled Borussia Dortmund into an enticing quarter-final clash with five-time FIFA Club World Cup (CWC) champions Real Madrid, thanks to a 2-1 victory over Monterrey at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia, on Saturday.
Making their debut in the CWC, Dortmund arrived at the match unbeaten in their last 10 fixtures (W8, D2). This impressive form bolstered Niko Kovac’s squad as they took on Monterrey, marking their inaugural meeting with a Liga MX opponent.
The gap in quality was evident just 14 minutes into the game when Dortmund struck first. Guirassy was the man to break the deadlock, expertly finishing a one-on-one chance after Karim Adeyemi’s stunning back-heel setup.
Unfazed, Monterrey almost equalised immediately, with Jesus Corona’s shot hitting the outside of the post, followed by Nelson Deossa’s powerful attempt, which forced a fine save from Gregor Kobel.
Dortmund swiftly responded, as Guirassy netted his second goal merely ten minutes after opening the scoring, once again leveraging Adeyemi’s keen eye to slot the ball into the bottom corner.
The Guinean was relentless, nearly securing a hat-trick shortly after the half-hour mark but narrowly missing the target following a delightful cross from Jobe Bellingham.
Motivated by a resolute half-time team talk, Monterrey swiftly clawed back into contention, scoring within three minutes of the second half.
German Berterame, who had already found the net twice in the tournament, powered home a crucial header from close range.
Despite the experienced Marcel Sabitzer being introduced to stabilise Dortmund’s grip on the match, Kobel was called upon again to deny Corona in a one-on-one situation at the near post.
Monterrey continued to press, and Dortmund’s difficulties persisted past the hour mark, with Berterame’s effort being disallowed for the slightest offside infraction.
A late triple substitution, including the attacking talents of Lucas Ocampos and Roberto de la Rosa, failed to energise Monterrey’s efforts to force extra time, as Dortmund managed to hold on despite a less convincing performance in the second half, advancing to Saturday’s showcase.

In the end, Monterrey’s aspirations in the Big Apple were dashed, paving the way for a rematch of the 2024 UEFA Champions League final, set to unfold in New York this weekend. Guirassy’s performance marked a notable highlight in Monterrey’s commendable run in the 2025 FIFA CWC, concluding their campaign after an unbeaten group stage (W1, D2).
