Botafogo has dismissed manager Renato Paiva following their exit from the Club World Cup, the Brazilian club confirmed, despite his team achieving a surprising victory over Champions League holders Paris Saint-Germain earlier in the tournament.
Paiva’s squad was eliminated in the round of 16, suffering a 1-0 defeat in extra time against fellow Brazilian outfit Palmeiras, leading to the decision to part ways after only four months at the helm.
Botafogo made headlines during the Club World Cup by securing a 1-0 win against PSG in the group stages, and they also triumphed over the Seattle Sounders. They progressed to the knockout stage as runners-up in Group B, despite a 1-0 loss to Atletico Madrid.
“The Club expresses its gratitude to Paiva and his coaching staff for their dedication to Botafogo over recent months,” the club stated on social media.
“We especially recognise the historic win against Paris Saint-Germain during the Club World Cup, as well as qualifying for the round of 16 in both the (Copa) Libertadores and the Copa do Brasil.”
