Following the announcement that Brad Fittler is no longer a contender for the Kangaroos coaching position, NRL icon Cam Smith has expressed a renewed interest in exploring the role further.
Mal Meninga has stepped down to take on the coaching role with the Perth Bears, which opens up an important vacancy ahead of the upcoming Ashes series.
On Monday, Fittler disclosed his decision to withdraw from the selection process, citing a need to prioritise other obligations.

Smith, who has proudly donned the green and gold jersey for Australia on 56 occasions, remains enthusiastic about the opportunity to discuss the role and assess whether it fits within his current commitments.
“Absolutely, I’m definitely interested in having a discussion about the role and its responsibilities,” Smith shared during an interview on Nine’s 100% Footy.
“So far, I haven’t had a conversation with anyone from the NRL or anyone on the (ARL) Commission about it.
“We all assumed that (Brad Fittler) would be the next Kangaroos coach, so this news has caught us by surprise today.
“For me, if I were to take on the position or even consider it, I’d need to have a conversation about what the role entails and the commitments involved.

“Certainly, with the Ashes series approaching and a World Cup next year, the timing is critical.
“As Freddy mentioned, he has a fantastic role with Channel Nine, and I share that sentiment; I cherish my commentary position right now. With three young kids to care for, I’m also in Bundaberg supporting my oldest who’s playing netball this evening.
“That said, it would be an extraordinary chance to coach our national team. I’ve had the privilege of playing for the Kangaroos many times.
“To lead such a prestigious team with incredible footballers would be a remarkable opportunity.”
Also in contention for the role is former Broncos coach Kevin Walters, seen as a leading candidate.
