Brad Fittler has shared his reasons for stepping back from the race for the vacant Kangaroos coaching position.
With Mal Meninga set to join the Perth Bears, Fittler was considered one of the leading candidates for the role.
In an exclusive chat with Wide World of Sports, Fittler expressed his desire to concentrate on his media obligations.

Fittler mentioned he “struggled” with his decision to withdraw from consideration but ultimately assessed it was the right move given his existing commitments.
“There was an opportunity, and I’m very thankful for being considered, but in light of my current circumstances, my engagements with Channel 9 and the NRL have been particularly enjoyable,” Fittler remarked during his interview with 2GB.
“When this role became available and I started to reflect on it, I realised it might be better suited for someone else at this time.
“It was an amazing opportunity, but I didn’t feel confident I could deliver the level of commitment it deserved, which influenced my decision not to pursue it.
“However, what an extraordinary chance for someone else. It requires a candidate with ample time to organise hotels, venues, training facilities, and equipment – it’s a significant undertaking, but the experience will be remarkable, especially with three Tests in England planned.”
Fittler acknowledged that his media responsibilities made it challenging to balance with his coaching duties for the Blues.
“I won’t say that I won’t consider it again down the track. I found that when I was commentating while coaching the Origin team, it could get a bit tricky discussing players while also needing to select them,” he explained.
“At times, it felt a bit muddy and weighed on my mind.”
Cameron Smith and Kevin Walters are anticipated to be top contenders for the ARL Commission’s search for the Australian coaching role.
Fittler believes either of them would excel in the position and clarified that he is “absolutely not” closing the door on future coaching opportunities.
Australia is due to face England in an Ashes series at the conclusion of the season.
Fittler steered the Blues to Origin series victories in 2018, 2019, and 2021.
