Billy Slater revealed that the idea of recalling experienced veteran Josh Papali’i to the Maroons squad had been on his mind for a couple of years.
After retiring from representative football in 2023, the Raiders powerhouse has been brought back into the Origin fold for next week’s decisive game in Sydney, taking the place of Mo Fotuaika in the team.
There are reports that Papali’i is nearing a deal to join the Super League next year.
He has made 23 appearances for the Maroons and scored three tries during his tenure.
“I’ve had this thought in the back of my mind for a few years, especially this year considering the way Big Papa has performed for Canberra. His efforts have been outstanding,” Slater told reporters on Monday morning.

“I believe his presence can enhance the team. I spoke to him a few days ago, and his response aligned perfectly with my thoughts, which was brilliant,” Slater added.
“He still has that passion to play for this team and to represent Queensland. It was wonderful to see he’s eager to deliver a strong performance for his state.”
Papali’i’s return to the squad mirrors the unforgettable recall of Allan Langer as the Maroons halfback for the 2001 decider, where Langer contributed significantly to three first-half tries and scored one himself, leading Queensland to victory.
Slater sees a similar “aura” surrounding Papali’i.
“He’s a true warrior who has stood by this team for many years,” he commented.

“What will instil confidence in his teammates is seeing Big Papa out there doing his job. That’s what he needs to focus on; everything else will fall into place. He’s been doing this for Canberra, which is reflected in their position at the top of the ladder. Their team is performing exceptionally well, and he’s contributing significantly.”
“I felt he could offer something valuable to our side, which is why I made this decision. I’ve always kept that option open. Despite his retirement, I believed he’d jump at the chance to represent again, and now that opportunity is here, I genuinely feel it’s the right time.”
This moment follows an emotionally charged month for Papali’i, during which he achieved a significant milestone in Round 14 by becoming the most-capped Raider in club history, playing his 319th match, scoring two tries, and kicking a conversion.
Recently, he and his wife Mesepa celebrated the arrival of their fourth child, a baby boy.
Slater confirmed that Papali’i would not join his teammates in Maroons camp on Monday, allowing him a few additional days at home to “prioritise being a dad.”
