During Nine’s coverage of Sunday afternoon football, Johnathan Thurston provided a response reminiscent of Billy Slater when asked about the Maroons’ fullback selection. The current contenders for the position are Reece Walsh and Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow.
Walsh last appeared in the State of Origin series in 2024, but an injury at the start of the current season opened the door for Kalyn Ponga to step in for the first two matches. Unfortunately, Ponga is now sidelined due to a Lisfranc injury sustained in the match against the Raiders.
Nine’s Marlee Silva probed Thurston for his choice at fullback, but he kept his cards close to his chest.

Thurston stated, “I believe we cannot go wrong with either option at fullback, it’s merely a matter of which one complements the rest of the squad better.”
“Of course, Hammer excelled on the wing in game two, and Reece has been absent from this level for a couple of years.”
“Ultimately, whatever is best for the team is what Billy should go with.”

Nine presenter Danika Mason labelled Thurston’s answer as “very political”.
Former Blues coach Brad Fittler then took the opportunity to tease him.
“How did he manage to dodge that question?” he quipped.
“Whatever’s best for the team,” he added with a hint of sarcasm.
