Rabbitohs coach Wayne Bennett has shared his insights with Queensland’s selectors regarding the fullback role following Kalyn Ponga’s injury.
Ponga has been sidelined for Origin III due to a Lisfranc injury sustained during the match against the Raiders.
With the Knights fullback out, Reece Walsh and Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow have emerged as the primary candidates for the position.
Tabuai-Fidow, who played as a centre in Origin I and on the wing in Origin II, shone brightly against the Rabbitohs, scoring four tries.
Despite this, Bennett believes he should not take on the No.1 jersey due to his versatility.

“Probably not,” he said after the match when asked about Tabuai-Fidow’s suitability for the position.
“He’s too valuable in other roles, such as centre or wing. I believe they can find someone to fill the fullback position, as there are other areas that need more attention.”
Walsh also impressed in his outing against the Warriors, reinstating himself as a contender. Nonetheless, there are worries regarding the 22-year-old’s knee injury. Broncos coach Michael Maguire has stated that the fullback is “ready” to go.

In regard to what Dolphins coach Kristian Woolf had to say, he supported Tabuai-Fidow in taking on the role at fullback if required.
“I would love to see him given a chance there; I know he would excel,” he remarked.
“The last time I discussed this subject, my comments were somewhat misinterpreted. He is certainly a great fullback for us and has proven himself in both centre and wing positions as well. If he gets the opportunity at fullback, I have no doubt he would perform exceptionally well, and representing Queensland means a lot to him—he wouldn’t disappoint anyone.”
