The incredible legacy of Tom Richards is being commemorated with the introduction of a medal awarded to the top player in the Wallabies versus British and Irish Lions series.
Notably, Richards is the only player born in Australia to have represented both the Wallabies and the Lions on the international stage.
Additionally, England-born Blair Swannell is the sole other athlete to have played for both Australia and the Lions.

Richards, who was a gold medallist for Australia at the 1908 London Olympics, spent time residing in the UK, South Africa, France, and Australia before he enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force.
He participated in the initial Gallipoli landing in 1915 and sustained injuries during the Second Battle of Bullecourt in 1917, later being awarded the Military Cross for his bravery.
Phil Waugh, the chief executive of Rugby Australia, stated, “Rugby Australia and the British and Irish Lions are thrilled to commemorate the extraordinary life and legacy of Tom Richards through the presentation of the player of the series medal.”

“Tom lived a life characterised by courage, adventure, service, and dedication, inspiring countless individuals worldwide for more than a century—a legacy that will undoubtedly continue for generations to come.”
“On behalf of Rugby Australia, I extend my gratitude to Tom’s family for allowing us to honour his lasting memory through the Tom Richards player of the series medal.”
The medal is set to be presented following the final Test between the Wallabies and Lions in Sydney on August 2.

“His remarkable achievements on the rugby pitch, combined with his bravery and service during WWI, lend this recognition profound significance. Tom’s service at Gallipoli and the Military Cross awarded for valour illustrate the depth of his character and commitment.”
“It is a fitting and poignant tribute to see his name associated with such a distinguished honour that acknowledges his life and lasting impact in the rugby community.”
Previously, the Wallabies and Lions competed for the Tom Richards Cup in 2001 and 2013.
However, in 2021, the Lions declared they would award a perpetual trophy in all series they participate in—including those against the Wallabies—working alongside Rugby Australia to ensure Richards’ accomplishments are always celebrated.
Additionally, Swannell will be recognised with the player of the match medal during the AUNZ Invitational XV match against the Lions in Adelaide on July 12.
Swannell tragically passed away at the age of 39 on the shores of Gallipoli in 1915.
