Daniel Svensson etched his name in history as the first Swedish player to find the net at the newly-expanded FIFA Club World Cup, scoring the sole goal for Borussia Dortmund to secure a win over Ulsan Hyundai, thereby securing his team’s progression to the Round of 16.
Following a draw against Fluminense and an entertaining win over Mamelodi Sundowns, any form of victory against the already eliminated South Korean side guaranteed Dortmund’s advancement from Group F.
The crucial goal came just nine minutes before half-time, as Jobe Bellingham held the ball up in the penalty area and laid it off to the onrushing Svensson, who fired a low shot from 10 yards out.
“For our goal, I made a run into the box, and Jobe Bellingham picked me out perfectly. I just aimed to finish as quickly as I could. Scoring felt amazing,” Svensson shared with the press following the match.
It was one of several chances created by the German side in the first half at Cincinnati. The 23-year-old recognised that this early dominance was pivotal in earning the three points, stating, “Overall, it was a solid performance, particularly in the first half where we were in control. It was a well-deserved victory.”
Dortmund topped the group with seven points, finishing ahead of Fluminense, and will carry their unbeaten streak into the Round of 16, where they will meet Mexican side Monterrey. With their strong performances throughout the tournament, it’s no surprise that Svensson and his teammates are filled with confidence.
“We’re feeling very confident. Our performances have been improving steadily. We may have started a bit slowly, but I think today showcased a much better display, and we’re looking forward to the next round.”
