Manly’s head coach, Anthony Seibold, has categorically refuted claims that he requested Daly Cherry-Evans step down as captain.
The Sea Eagles have been on a turbulent run since the experienced halfback announced his departure at the end of the season to join an undisclosed rival.
He has faced criticism, particularly from commentators at News Corp and presenters on Fox League programs.
During a recent episode, it was alleged that Seibold had discussed with Cherry-Evans the possibility of handing the captaincy over to another player for the rest of the season.
This accusation was addressed during Seibold’s press conference on Thursday.
“Absolutely not, never. It’s not something I’ve ever considered,” Seibold stated.

“I don’t take decisions lightly, and if we look at some examples, the last player in Chow’s position to announce he wasn’t staying was Adam Reynolds in 2021, and Souths stood by him.
“He remained their captain, performed exceptionally well, and they even reached a grand final.
“I see no reason to make a change. Chez is our leader, and I’ve stated that publicly on multiple occasions.

“So, I’m not sure where that suggestion originated, but it’s completely unfounded.”
Seibold mentioned that his coaching staff and players gather for a weekly “campfire session,” where two individuals are chosen to speak to the team.
This week it was Cherry-Evans’ turn, and he shared his reasoning for leaving the club where he won a premiership in 2011.
“I thought Chez articulated his thoughts brilliantly,” Seibold remarked.

“He explained that he wanted to give the club ample time to find a successor, which we successfully did in signing Jamal Fogarty… He just needs a bit of time to determine his next steps. I struggle to see any negativity in that.”
Seibold has been a staunch defender of his captain amidst the ongoing scrutiny from Fox League.
When questioned by a News Corp journalist on Thursday about his ongoing support for Cherry-Evans, he replied:
“Because he’s our leader, he’s our captain, and I share a strong rapport with Chez.”
“I see the wisdom in him informing the club early about his plans to leave. This allowed us to seek a replacement rather than being caught out at the end of the season.
“I support all our players. He’s our skipper.
“I’ve considered this carefully… Adam Reynolds did a tremendous job as captain after he announced he wouldn’t be staying at Souths.
“I always seek precedent, and that is the recent evidence I have.”
The Sea Eagles are set to face the Tigers at Brookvale this Friday evening.
