Fluminense’s goalless draw against Mamelodi Sundowns at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami secured their place in the last 16 of the FIFA Club World Cup, while the Bafana ba Style concluded their campaign with four points.
Both teams approached this match with their advancement on the line, yet found themselves in contrasting positions. The Sundowns needed nothing less than a victory, whereas Fluminense was aware that a draw would suffice to maintain their position in the top two of Group F.
It was therefore to be expected that the South African side would dominate the early exchanges, putting pressure on Fluminense and testing goalkeeper Fabio on multiple occasions.
Fabio first made a straightforward save from Lucas Ribeiro’s effort, gathering the ball on his second attempt, before pulling off a magnificent stop to deny Tashreeq Matthews.
The Brazilian keeper then parried Divine Lunga’s low strike from a tight angle as Mamelodi continued to apply the pressure.
Despite that intense start from their opponents, Fluminense gradually settled into the match and established some control.
Around the half-hour mark, Ignacio headed wide from a corner, and Jhon Arias sent a low shot skimming past the goal line.
Just before the half-time break, Nonato curled an attempt just inches wide of the post, leaving Fluminense in a more confident frame of mind as they headed into the interval.

With the Tricolor just 45 minutes away from the knockout round, they were happy to let the Sundowns take the initiative and sought to exploit counter-attacks.
Their strategy nearly proved effective just after the hour mark when German Cano struck the post from a volley following an assist from Arias.
In reply, Miguel Cardoso’s side fashioned several promising moves but frequently succumbed to their forwards’ struggles with maintaining offside positions.
This lack of awareness meant Fabio had a relatively quiet game, allowing Fluminense to hold onto their lead with relative comfort.
Consequently, Renato Gaucho’s team advances to the knockout stage and, having finished second to Borussia Dortmund, will now face the winners of Group E.
The Sundowns, on the other hand, will return home to South Africa with pride, having showcased an exhilarating style of football throughout the tournament.
