Borussia Dortmund’s manager, Niko Kovac, remarked on Tuesday that the team that adapts best to the sweltering summer temperatures in the United States will emerge victorious in the Club World Cup.
The German club is set to clash with South Korea’s Ulsan HD on Wednesday as they aim for a spot in the last 16 of Group F in Cincinnati, where temperatures are expected to soar to 34 degrees Celsius.
“I believe this tournament will not be won by the most talented team, but by the team that can best acclimatise to these environmental conditions—this is likely to be the team that comes out on top,” Kovac expressed to the media at the TQL Stadium.
Dortmund recently secured a narrow 4-3 victory against South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns at the same venue, where their substitutes sought refuge from the intense sun, first in the dressing room and then under umbrellas on the sidelines in the second half.
“Our squad is well supported by our medical team and staff,” Kovac continued.
“We have implemented necessary precautions, and we strive to make wise choices in caring for our players.
“We utilise very cold towels and ice baths. The players also need to cool their legs and feet in cold water and ice baths.
“During our previous match, some players viewed the game from the dressing room; we preferred not to have them on the bench under direct sunlight as we want to keep them shaded.“
Kovac also highlighted the importance of avoiding the risk of the players getting too chilled.
“We aim to moderate the air conditioning and fan intensity because switching frequently between hot and cold can be hazardous,” he added.
In addition, Kovac confirmed that winger Jamie Gittens, who has been the subject of transfer speculation with Chelsea, will miss the match against Ulsan due to illness.
“There are numerous rumours circulating at the moment, but he is genuinely unwell,” Kovac stated.
“He has been feeling poorly the last few days with a blocked nose and sore throat.
“You know, being in an air-conditioned environment for extended periods can lead to sickness, but that’s part of the game.“
