Lyon, under the management of Paulo Fonseca, has faced administrative relegation to France’s second division due to financial difficulties. This decision, however, remains open to appeal.
The National Directorate of Management Control (DNCG) confirmed the club’s drop to Ligue 2 on Tuesday.
This Tuesday, the club’s president, John Textor, along with director of football Mickael Gerlinger, were interviewed by the DNCG in an attempt to prevent this outcome, following an initial ruling made on November 15th.
During that winter meeting, the organisation had previously issued a warning that the club would face relegation at the end of the season unless it could provide the necessary financial guarantees, owing to a debt totalling €175 million (£149 million).
Textor had previously expressed confidence in the club’s financial status, asserting that they would secure “several hundred million euros in the upcoming months”.
Despite these assurances, the sanctions have been enforced, leaving Fonseca’s side in a precarious position.
