Leeds United have strengthened their defensive line as they prepare for a return to the Premier League, announcing the acquisition of Slovenian international centre-back Jaka Bijol from Udinese.
The 26-year-old joins the club for a reported fee of £15 million, making him Leeds’ second signing of the summer following the free transfer arrival of German striker Lukas Nmecha.
Bijol brings a significant amount of experience to the Elland Road side, both at club and international levels.
He has earned 63 caps for Slovenia and played a vital role in Euro 2024, where the team held England to a goalless draw during the group stage, before bowing out to Portugal in the Round of 16 on penalties.
“This might be the biggest day of my career so far, but I’m ready for the challenge,” Bijol stated on the club’s official website.
“It’s a considerable challenge for everyone involved—me, the club, and we are all preparing for it together.
“I believe both the club and I are primed for the Premier League.”
For the past three seasons, Bijol has been competing in Serie A with Udinese, where he made 95 appearances. Prior to that, he enjoyed a four-year stint at CSKA Moscow, where he played in both the Champions League and the Europa League.
Leeds United secured their return to the Premier League in May after a two-year gap, clinching the Championship title on goal difference after finishing level on 100 points with Burnley.
