PSG Glide Through Past Seattle Sounders to Advance in Club World Cup

Paris Saint-Germain booked their spot in the Round of 16 of the FIFA Club World Cup (CWC) with a 2-0 victory over the Seattle Sounders.

While they showcased their dominance throughout the match against the American team, the European champions were grateful for some good luck that allowed them to take a narrow lead into half-time.

The breakthrough came thanks to a significant deflection from Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, who fortuitously diverted a mis-hit shot from Vitinha into the net.

This goal was the result of sustained pressure, with goalkeeper Stefan Frei making a series of outstanding saves, most notably an acrobatic effort to deny French prodigy Désiré Doué, whose strike was destined for the top corner.

Although the Sounders’ attacking options were sparse in the first half, they failed to capitalise on a blunder from Gianluigi Donnarumma that could have gifted them an early goal. The Italian keeper hesitated outside his box, playing a weak pass to Seattle’s Jesus Ferreira, who then missed the target from a tight angle.

The second half saw PSG continue their dominating performance, but following last week’s unexpected loss to Botafogo, a solitary goal remained a precarious advantage.

Les Parisiens doubled their advantage with a swift counterattack, as Doué connected with substitute Bradley Barcola; the latter’s low delivery was expertly finished by the advancing Achraf Hakimi, effectively confirming PSG’s advancement to the knockout rounds.

The final 30 minutes were taxing for the MLS outfit, who endeavoured to keep pace under the blazing sun but ultimately succumbed well before referee Cristián Garay’s final whistle sounded.

In the dying moments of the match, Cristian Roldan almost provided a consolation for the home fans, unleashing a spectacular long-range effort that narrowly missed the target, marking the end of the Sounders’ CWC journey.
