Inter Miami’s head coach, Javier Mascherano, has declared that Monday’s showdown against Brazil’s Palmeiras in the concluding match of Club World Cup Group A represents a pivotal moment for the MLS franchise, urging his players to fully embrace the occasion.
The team’s unexpected victory over Porto, highlighted by a stunning free-kick from Lionel Messi, has positioned them with a chance to progress into the tournament’s last 16.
While a draw would suffice for the club, which is only five years old, to advance, Mascherano is adamant that his squad should not leave anything to chance.
“We are facing what could be one of the most significant matches in the history of our club. We need to let that fill us with enthusiasm, viewing it as an opportunity rather than a pressure,” Mascherano remarked regarding his charges, who have performed admirably thus far.
“It would be a grave mistake to approach the game solely with the outcome in mind. When your focus is on the result, unforeseen circumstances can arise that complicate matters,” he added.
“Ultimately, our objective is to go out and win, just as we do in every match, whether it’s in the Club World Cup, the MLS, the Champions League, or any other competition we face,” he stated.
Although Miami’s form leading into the tournament has been somewhat inconsistent, Mascherano expressed confidence following their victory over Portuguese side Atlanta, but he also cautioned against taking unnecessary risks.
“Our intent is to secure a win based on a strategic plan. We won’t act recklessly; we need to minimise Palmeiras’ strengths while capitalising on their weaknesses,” he clarified.
Mascherano might get a boost with the return of Spanish full-back Jordi Alba, who missed the draw against Al Ahly due to injury but featured for the final 11 minutes against Porto.
“I feel physically fit. I was sidelined for three weeks, but thanks to an international break during that time, it doesn’t feel like I’ve missed much. We’ll see what the coach decides,” Alba shared.
“Competing against top-tier teams sharpens our squad, and if we progress to the knockout stages, just imagine what our potential could be. I firmly believe we are on the right path, and we must keep it going,” he emphasised.
