Trent Alexander-Arnold left behind some considerable “big shoes” after making his move from Liverpool to Real Madrid last month. However, new recruit Jeremie Frimpong is confident in his ability to step up and fill the void left by the England international in the reigning Premier League champions’ backline.
Frimpong’s transfer from Bayer Leverkusen was confirmed just hours after Alexander-Arnold’s departure to Real Madrid, marking the Dutch international as Arne Slot’s first acquisition since clinching the English top-tier title.
“Liverpool is a massive club, so inevitably, it’s big shoes to fill,” Frimpong shared with Sky Sports during an interview released on Sunday, when asked about his competition with Conor Bradley for the right-back spot in place of Alexander-Arnold.
“It’s a winning team … they secure trophies for a reason. Being part of a club like Liverpool means you have to step up and deliver.”
“I’ve always had faith in myself. I’m a winner, and that’s the attitude I’ll bring to the team.”
Born in Amsterdam, Frimpong, who is also capable of playing as a winger, spent nine years in Manchester City’s youth system before making his senior debut in 2019 with Celtic, where he celebrated a Scottish Premiership title in his first season.
The 24-year-old made the switch to Leverkusen in 2021, where he had an impressive run of 34 appearances, helping the team secure the Bundesliga championship in 2023-24.
“The Premier League is the pinnacle of football. Growing up in Manchester, returning was always part of my plan,” Frimpong stated.
“Having experienced being a champion at Bayer Leverkusen, it’s a privilege to join another championship-winning team. Transitioning from watching Liverpool to actively playing for them is surreal.”
“The manager has detailed how I can contribute to the team, and he has a genuine appreciation for my style of play. That has given me immense motivation and confidence.”
