Ryan Papenhuyzen secured a thrilling 25-24 triumph for Melbourne with a one-point field goal during golden point in a hard-fought clash against South Sydney on Saturday night.
Star winger Alex Johnston scored four tries at Accor Stadium, bringing his first-grade tally to 206, now just six short of matching Ken Irvine’s prestigious record. In a dramatic moment in the 77th minute, Latrell Mitchell executed a perfect grubber kick that set up a game-tying try for Tyrone Munro.
However, it was Papenhuyzen who clinched the win for the Storm, converting a field goal from 15 metres during the initial phase of golden point.
Facing a 20-18 deficit in the 69th minute, Melbourne regained the upper hand thanks to a stellar play from the nimble winger Sualauvi Fa’alogo. He flawlessly took a high ball from Mitchell, broke through the line, and offloaded to Tyran Wishart, who dashed away to score.
