The Bulldogs have bolstered their squad in their quest for a premiership title after 21 years, with up-and-coming forward Finau Latu signing with the club before the June 30 cut-off.
Though currently sidelined due to a back injury, Latu had previously committed to a three-year contract with Belmore for next season. However, Canterbury successfully negotiated an early release from the Dragons.
A product of the Dragons’ junior system, Latu played for the Harold Matthews team in 2022 and had a significant role in their premiership-winning SG Ball squad the following year. He then progressed to the Jersey Flegg and New South Wales Cup before the Bulldogs made their move.
“The Dragons can confirm that Finau Latu has been granted an early release from the remainder of his 2025 contract,” said a club statement.
“Although Latu had already signed with the Bulldogs for 2026, he will now join the club ahead of schedule. His current injury means he will be able to commence rehab under the supervision of his new club.”

“The Dragons wish Finau all the best as he embarks on this new chapter in his career.”
While the Saints have accepted Latu’s departure, the situation was quite different earlier in the year, with coach Shane Flanagan expressing frustration over how negotiations unfolded.
“I wanted to keep him, and I’m not pleased with how the negotiations were handled,” coach Flanagan remarked in April.
“The management’s approach to this matter was very disappointing.”
For Canterbury, this is a significant acquisition, especially following their recruitment of Lachlan Galvin, Latu’s teammate in the 2023 Australian Schoolboys squad, just three weeks ago.
“It was no surprise that several clubs were keen on Finau, but we are thrilled that he sees his future here at Belmore,” stated Bulldogs GM Phil Gould.
“He will have outstanding mentors around him, including Max King, Viliame Kikau, and Kurt Mann, and we believe he has the potential to develop into a remarkable player for the Bulldogs.”
