The prodigious talent of German football is set to don the crown of the Premier League’s new star after Florian Wirtz made the switch to Liverpool from Bayer Leverkusen for a record fee.
Fresh off clinching their 20th English top-flight title, Arne Slot’s side has splashed out to secure a rising star, already hailed as one of the finest in the world by former Liverpool midfielder and Wirtz’s past coach, Xabi Alonso.
Reports from the UK on Friday revealed that the Premier League champions had come to terms on a deal that could rise to £116 million ($157 million) for the dynamic attacking midfielder.
German sources suggest the initial fee may be even higher—estimated at 130 million euros (£111 million)—with performance-related bonuses potentially pushing it to 150 million euros.
Wirtz’s immense potential as a teenager ignited a controversy between his hometown club Cologne and Leverkusen five years ago when Leverkusen, financially supported by Bayer, secured his signature at only 17.
Cologne claimed there was a gentleman’s agreement in place to prevent the poaching of youth players, but Leverkusen contended that Wirtz was being signed for their first team, and he made his Bundesliga debut within months.
His upward trajectory hit a bump when he suffered a cruciate knee ligament injury in March 2022, sidelining him for nearly 10 months.
Upon his return, a new chapter began under Alonso, who had taken over as Leverkusen manager, leading the fledgling star through an extraordinary period for the club.
Leverkusen astonishingly ended Bayern Munich’s stronghold on the Bundesliga, claiming the title and the German Cup without a single defeat during the 2023/24 season.
Wirtz celebrated his first career hat-trick on the day the title was confirmed against Werder Bremen, which contributed to his accolades as Bundesliga player of the year.
“Flo is one of the top players globally, he’s truly world class,” stated Alonso, who likened his protege’s game intelligence to that of Lionel Messi.
“What makes Messi exceptional? It’s his ability to understand when and how to make simple passes. Messi highlights: ‘You’re better positioned? Here, have the ball’,” continued Alonso, a legend from Liverpool’s iconic 2005 Champions League victory.
“It’s not just about being spectacular, but about making clever and effective decisions. Florian embodies that quality, which is why he’s outstanding.”
‘A Dream Fit’
Both Wirtz and Alonso had committed to Leverkusen for an additional year, but a Europa League final defeat to Atalanta at the end of the 2023/24 season hinted at challenges ahead.
Bayern Munich reasserted their influence on German football last season, but Wirtz opted not to follow the trend of many who moved from rival Bundesliga teams there.
Instead, he expressed a clear preference for joining the Premier League champions, eager to carve his name among the legends of Liverpool.
“I’m thrilled to embark on this new adventure. A crucial factor in my decision was the desire to leave the Bundesliga and embrace the Premier League,” shared Wirtz.
“I also had conversations with players who have experienced the Premier League, and they assured me it’s an ideal fit for me; every pitch is top-notch, and matches are thoroughly enjoyable. I can’t wait to play my first game.”
Despite an impressive tally of 57 goals and 65 assists over 197 matches for Leverkusen, Wirtz will start his journey at Anfield under the considerable influence of Mohamed Salah.
The Reds are relying on Wirtz’s creative spark to help sustain Salah’s impressive scoring record while alleviating some of the offensive pressure on the team.
Previously, Liverpool’s record signing, £85 million forward Darwin Nunez, has struggled to meet expectations and could be offloaded to balance the books following this significant investment.
Liverpool will be hoping that Wirtz can withstand the weight of his transfer fee and the rigours of the Premier League, ensuring that there’s no repeat of the infamous second season slump under Slot.
