Quincy Promes, a former Netherlands international, has been extradited from the United Arab Emirates to the Netherlands, where he will serve prison sentences for drug trafficking and assault, according to Dutch prosecutors on Friday.
Last year, a Dutch court sentenced the former Ajax Amsterdam and Spartak Moscow striker to six years in prison in absentia due to his direct involvement in two cocaine shipments from Brazil that passed through the port of Antwerp, Belgium, heading to the Netherlands in 2020.
In addition, in 2023, Promes was sentenced in absentia to 18 months’ imprisonment for assault related to a 2020 altercation in which he stabbed a cousin in the knee.
Promes has maintained his innocence regarding all charges and has lodged appeals in both matters. Just last month, he and his legal team sought a plea deal with the Dutch public prosecutor’s office, which was promptly turned down.
The 33-year-old, who has earned 50 caps for the Netherlands, was apprehended in Dubai in March last year at the request of the Dutch public prosecution service while attending a training camp with Spartak Moscow.
He was subsequently released from custody under conditions that prohibited him from leaving the United Arab Emirates. Following this, Spartak Moscow terminated his contract, leading him to sign with United FC of Dubai, a club in the UAE’s second division.
