Flamengo’s head coach Filipe Luis asserted on Thursday that his squad will steadfastly uphold their “ferocious, relentless style” as they gear up to take on Chelsea in an eagerly awaited Club World Cup showdown on Friday.
Currently dominating the Brazilian league, Flamengo aims to break a 13-year winless streak for South American clubs against their European rivals. The team heads into the match in outstanding form, having secured five consecutive victories across all competitions, including a commanding 2-0 win over Esperance de Tunis in their tournament debut.
Leading up to the game, Filipe Luis reiterated his firm belief in the team’s philosophy.
“Never waver in your convictions. I have a strong belief, a clear vision of what I think about the game,” he stated to reporters.
“I would never, under any circumstances, alter my team for an opponent. That would be completely and utterly unjust to the players. We will play exactly as we have prepared over the past eight months.”
Filipe Luis has crafted a Flamengo team that excels at controlling possession and setting the game’s rhythm. However, he acknowledged that Friday’s encounter against Chelsea will necessitate considerable “sacrifice,” emphasising the crucial role of their experienced defence, featuring former Juventus full-backs Danilo and Alex Sandro, in countering the Premier League side’s quality.
“Experience is always beneficial as these elite clubs possess game-changing players who rarely lose possession and can create threatening opportunities,” the Flamengo manager remarked.
“We understand that it will be a game of sacrifice. There will be times when we won’t have the ball, and during those moments, it’s essential that we run and combat as a unified team. The players are aware of this, having done it since my days as their teammate and now as their coach.”

Flamengo currently tops Group D with three points, narrowly edging Chelsea into first due to a tiebreaker based on yellow cards. Los Angeles FC and Esperance have yet to score and will face off in the other group match on Friday.
Having previously played for Chelsea, Filipe Luis expressed confidence in his squad’s camaraderie and resolve.
“The only avenue to victory is when all 11 players are aligned in the same direction. Knowing this is the path forward, we certainly have a chance,” he declared.
Friday’s fixture is set to showcase a clash of playing styles, as Flamengo’s attacking exuberance and possession-oriented play meets Chelsea’s defensive resilience and exceptional individual talent.
