Bayern Munich cruised to a resounding 10-0 victory over Auckland City in their opening match of the Club World Cup. However, German coach Vincent Kompany warned against any complacency ahead of their upcoming clash with Argentina’s Boca Juniors in their second Group C encounter.
Boca Juniors nearly secured a win in their opening game against Benfica but squandered a two-goal lead, settling for a 2-2 draw with the Portuguese side. Kompany acknowledged that Boca posed a significant threat, especially during transitions.
“We are well aware of the calibre of this tournament … every team involved here is a champion in their own right,” Kompany stated to reporters on Thursday, as Bayern aim for their third Club World Cup title.
“Boca are a very formidable opponent in transition. They are confident in exploiting their opportunities. The camaraderie in their squad is strong. We respect Boca, but our focus is on ourselves and showcasing our strengths in the match.”
Kompany expressed confidence in their ability to handle the Argentine style of play, given that many players from Argentina are competing across European leagues.
“We are familiar with many Argentinian players from the European leagues. It’s a style of football we understand well,” he remarked. “It might feel a bit like we’re the away team. Nevertheless, we need to embody what it means to be Bayern Munich and demonstrate the right passion.”
He also welcomed back attacking midfielder Jamal Musiala and centre-back Dayot Upamecano, both of whom had missed over two months due to injury.
Musiala, who netted 12 goals in Bayern’s pursuit of their 34th Bundesliga title, came off the bench to score a hat-trick against Auckland on Sunday.
“It’s fantastic to have Jamal Musiala and Dayot Upamecano back with us after a long layoff. Their reintegration is crucial, and we’re assessing how best to approach that. Aside from them, everyone else is fully fit,” Kompany confirmed.
