Former Dutch international Urby Emanuelson has announced that he and Ajax are in negotiations regarding the vacant assistant coach position at the club.
The 39-year-old Emanuelson began his professional journey at Ajax after developing through the esteemed youth academy. Over the course of his career at Ajax from 2004 to 2011, the versatile player featured in 255 matches, securing three KNVB Bekers and three Johan Cruyff Shields. Following his time at Ajax, the 17-time Dutch international represented AC Milan, Fulham, AS Roma, Atalanta, Hellas Verona, Sheffield Wednesday, and FC Utrecht before hanging up his boots in 2022.
Post-retirement, Emanuelson took on assistant coaching roles at FC Utrecht before returning to Ajax, where he has served as an assistant manager for the club’s U21 team since 2023.
Currently in Slovakia as a pundit for the U21 Euros, Emanuelson has revealed that talks are underway for him to assist head coach and former teammate John Heitinga with the senior squad.
“I had hoped to keep this under wraps a bit longer, but I am in discussions with the club,” Emanuelson stated. “Nothing is finalised as of yet, but we are looking into the options.”
Heitinga took over as Ajax’s head coach at the end of May, just under two weeks after the unexpected exit of Francesco Farioli.
