Andries Jonker, the manager of the Netherlands women’s football team, has stated his squad will be striving for success at the upcoming Women’s Euros.
The Dutch team, who clinched the title in 2017, assembled earlier this week as they gear up for the 2025 Women’s Euros to be held in Switzerland. Jonker noted an invigorated squad following a brief break.
“The energy during training is tremendous,” Jonker shared with NOS. “The players are performing at a high standard again. We spent time in Lourdes. We replenished our energy, our motivation, and our excitement. They are back on their path.”
This tournament will mark Jonker’s final appearance as head coach of the Oranje Lionesses, as the KNVB has decided not to extend his contract. The seasoned manager is eager to make this last campaign count.
“You realise this is your last opportunity to prepare for a tournament. I am fully aware of that. However, it doesn’t distract me. We are doing everything possible to perform at our best,” he explained to ANP.
“For the golden generation, winning the European Championship in 2017 was their pinnacle. They understand the taste of victory. We must seize our chances once more.”
Miedema
Star striker Vivianne Miedema has been sidelined since suffering a hamstring injury in March, but she has returned to unrestricted training and appears ready for the tournament.
“She participated in the full training session today. She’s fully engaged in the game and isn’t being held back. She’s well on her way. We’re not quite there yet, but we have time,” Jonker remarked.
The only other uncertainty in the Dutch squad is Lineth Beerensteyn, who missed the initial practice before the Euros.
The Women’s Euros are set to take place from July 2-27 in Switzerland. The Netherlands has been drawn into Group D, alongside Wales, as well as formidable teams like France and England.
