Andries Jonker, the manager of the Netherlands, has reiterated his team’s ambition to strive for triumph at the upcoming Women’s Euros.
The Netherlands, who claimed the title in 2017, convened earlier this week to commence preparations for the 2025 Women’s Euros, set to be held in Switzerland. Jonker was pleased to see a revitalised squad following a brief break.
“There’s a noticeable energy during training sessions,” Jonker remarked to NOS. “The standard is once again impressive. We journeyed to Lourdes to rejuvenate ourselves. We’ve restored our energy, our strength, and our enthusiasm. The team is back on course.”
This tournament will mark Jonker’s final stint at the helm of the Oranje Lionesses, as the KNVB has decided not to extend his contract. The seasoned coach is determined to make the most of his last opportunity.
“I understand that this is my last tournament preparation. I’m aware of it. But aside from that, it doesn’t impact me. We are committed to doing everything possible to excel,” Jonker stated in an interview with ANP.
“For this golden generation, winning the European Championship in 2017 was a pinnacle moment. They are well aware of what success tastes like. We need to seize our opportunities once more.”
Miedema
Star forward Vivianne Miedema has not featured in a match since sustaining a hamstring injury in March, but she is back in training without restrictions and appears set for the tournament.
“Today she took part in the entire training session. She can play fully in the matches; she is not being held back. She is progressing well. It’s not yet at its full potential, but we still have time,” Jonker commented.
Lineth Beerensteyn, the only other uncertainty within the Dutch squad, was absent from the first training session before the Euros.
The Women’s Euros will take place from July 2 to 27 in Switzerland. The Netherlands has been placed in Group D, alongside Wales, as well as footballing powerhouses France and England.
