Inter Miami coach Javier Mascherano has assured that Lionel Messi will be fit to take on Porto in the Club World Cup on Thursday, despite displaying some discomfort during training.
A video surfaced showing Messi gently touching his left leg during Wednesday’s session, but Mascherano has confirmed the experienced forward is primed for Miami’s second Group A clash in Atlanta.
“Throughout our journey from Miami to Atlanta, I noticed some concerns reported in various places, but Leo is in shape, he participated in the entire training session,” Mascherano informed the media.
“He did touch his leg, but sometimes players do that without it being a problem. He’s fit, and he will definitely play tomorrow.“
Mascherano also mentioned that Messi’s former Barcelona teammate, Jordi Alba, is available after recovering from an injury that sidelined him for the initial 0-0 draw against Al Ahly.
“We’ll assess what’s best for our strategy, whether he starts or not,” the coach stated. “In fact, I already have a decision in mind, but I won’t disclose that.“
Mascherano emphasised that maintaining possession would be crucial against Portugal’s Porto, a team familiar with competing in the Champions League and expected to give the MLS outfit a tough challenge.
“Our players tend to be at their best when they have possession, controlling the game and dominating the ball,” said the Argentine.
“Of course, we’re up against a team that excels at that as well; they’re a high-calibre side.
“However, on the pitch, it’s 11 against 11. We’ll aim to neutralise their strengths, exploit their weaknesses, and aim for a strong performance to achieve a favourable result.“

Inter Miami midfielder Sergio Busquets, a member of Spain’s 2010 World Cup-winning squad and a former Barcelona player of Messi’s, acknowledged the challenge his team will face at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
“They have excellent players, they’ve strengthened their squad, and we know this will be a tough match,” Busquets told reporters.
They’re a team that competes year in, year out, facing top sides like Sporting and Benfica.
“We’ll strive to be as solid as possible, remain closely knit, and do our absolute best as a team.
“If chances come our way, we have individuals capable of capitalising on them, but above all, we need to maintain solidity and secure a clean sheet.
