The relegation showdown in Italy’s Serie B has been postponed to Sunday after several players from Salernitana experienced food poisoning while returning home from their first leg against Sampdoria.
The Serie B league confirmed that it had granted Salernitana’s request to move the return match, which was originally set for Friday.
This decision was made following a review of the medical documents submitted by the club and a criminal complaint lodged by Salernitana with the authorities, as stated in the league’s announcement.
Approximately 20 players and staff fell ill on the flight back to Salerno after enduring a 2-0 defeat against Sampdoria in the opening leg of the playoffs in Genoa on Sunday.
Salernitana is at risk of facing a second straight relegation if they are unable to turn the situation around.
Meanwhile, former Serie A champions Sampdoria are striving to evade a humiliating drop to Serie C for the first time in their 79-year existence.
Despite facing relegation at the end of the regular season in May, Sampdoria received a reprieve when Brescia dropped down instead due to financial misconduct.
