The head coach of the Danish women’s national football team, Andrée Jeglertz, has acknowledged that the timing of his announcement to resign was far from ideal. This revelation came just prior to Denmark’s Nations League clash with Sweden in early June, a match that Denmark ultimately lost 6-1.
It was during the lead-up to the match against Sweden that Peter Moller, the Director of the Danish Football Association (FA), disclosed that Jeglertz would be stepping down after the European Championships, set to commence in early July.
Moller made this announcement following reports from various media outlets that HamKam’s coach, Jakob Michelsen, had been chosen to succeed Jeglertz after the EURO tournament, thereby indicating that Jeglertz would indeed depart. This public revelation was not the manner in which either the Danish FA or Jeglertz had wanted to address the situation.
“It wasn’t great. The timing was really unfortunate. It’s not something that either the players or I had wished for, but that’s how it has unfolded. We have to accept it, though it’s a regrettable circumstance,” Jeglertz told dr.dk.
He reiterated that his decision not to sign a new contract was not a reflection on the team or the FA but stemmed from his yearning to return to club management.
“I miss the day-to-day interaction with players and coaches, as well as the direct influence I have on the players. Being a national coach is a unique role that I do enjoy, but I must admit there are aspects I miss,” he stated.
“I have a lot of energy and a desire to spend more time on the training pitch than what is feasible as a national coach. That’s why I’ve made this decision,” Jeglertz concluded.
