James O’Connor is keeping his fingers crossed for a dream return to the Wallabies this week, while also aiming for a memorable conclusion to his Super Rugby journey in Christchurch on Saturday.
National coach Joe Schmidt is anticipated to announce a squad of approximately 40 players in Sydney on Thursday in preparation for upcoming Tests against Fiji and the British and Irish Lions.
Schmidt has acknowledged O’Connor this season, particularly praising his role as a ‘closer’ for the formidable Crusaders, who will take on the Chiefs in the final.

This will mark O’Connor’s first Super Rugby final, following the start of his professional career as a highly-touted 17-year-old with the Western Force in 2008.
Now at 34, he still holds the record as the youngest player to compete in Super Rugby, a career that has seen him play for the Melbourne Rebels, London Irish, Toulon, Queensland Reds, and Sale Sharks.
O’Connor also featured in the 2013 Lions series, which saw the tourists secure a 2-1 victory.

“I’ve certainly got my sights set on it,” O’Connor shared on Stan Sport’s Between Two Posts Extra when quizzed about the Lions.
“But I’m just thankful for the opportunity and where I stand at the moment. Competing in the Super Rugby finals was my intention by moving here – to learn but also to be part of a successful team, and it has all fallen into place beautifully.
“I really just want to stay focused, savour each moment, and take things as they arise.

“If being involved with the Lions is part of my journey, that would be sensational, and I’d be thrilled about it, but that’s something to address next week. Right now, I’m completely focused on getting ready for this tough Chiefs side.”
The Crusaders boast a record of 31-0 in home finals, yet the betting odds have favoured the minor premier Chiefs as slight favourites.
O’Connor is nearing the end of his contract, set to join the Leicester Tigers under current Wallabies assistant coach Geoff Parling in 2025-26.
“I feel great, physically strong, and in good shape,” he noted.
“I’d like to continue playing for as long as possible. This is my first time participating in a Super Rugby final – it has been a long wait, considering this is my 19th season!”
The Crusaders made a comeback from 14-0 down to defeat the defending champions, the Blues, 21-14 in the semi-finals.

The Crusaders have claimed a total of 12 Super Rugby titles, along with two editions of Super Rugby Aotearoa.
“I’ve been searching for secrets to bring back to Oz,” O’Connor commented.
“But it’s not so much about the finer details; it’s the unwavering willingness to put in hard yards. The players truly commit to their roles. A prevalent discussion point here is the extent to which teams are prepared to match us all the way to the final whistle.”

“So, it’s about finding your limits, especially on a wet night when it’s cold. It’s about how far you’re prepared to push yourself for the collective success and those little effort-based elements. It’s tough to play out there.
“We often mention this venue as our fortress. The players embody a tremendous pride in representing Christchurch and the South Island.
“This team boasts some exceptional minds, comprising not only intelligent rugby players but also players who thrive on physicality and play with intelligence as well. I’ve learnt a lot and thoroughly enjoyed this experience.”

O’Connor praised Crusaders fullback Will Jordan, who netted two tries to help secure their place in the final.
“I’ve always valued him as a player, but being on the same team highlights the dedication he has off the pitch regarding our strategy.
“He’s a player who thrives in significant matches, demanding the ball and showing leadership. Playing alongside him has been fantastic. Let’s see if we can claim victory at home.”
