Chelsea kicked off their Club World Cup journey with a solid victory in Group D, securing a 2-0 win against LAFC. This match marked the first-ever encounter in the CWC between English and American teams.
As anticipated, Chelsea were the firm favourites, and the initial phases of the match reflected this, with the American side thoroughly confined to their own half. The Blues dominated possession, leading to their opening significant opportunity when Noni Madueke’s left-footed shot was deflected by Hugo Lloris.
Frustrations mounted for Enzo Maresca’s side as the first half progressed, evidenced by Cole Palmer’s ambitious attempt from 30 yards that soared over the crossbar—an indication of their early struggles.

Despite their mounting frustrations, it always felt as if Chelsea’s wealth of talent would eventually yield a clear-cut chance.
That opportunity presented itself a little over ten minutes before half-time. Pedro Neto broke free, deftly evaded an LAFC defender, and slotted the ball into the near post beyond Lloris.
LAFC realised they needed to alter their approach during the break, and the introduction of David Martínez at half-time nearly bore fruit as he curled a shot just wide from the edge of the box.
However, for all LAFC’s intent at the start of the second half, they were quickly reminded of Chelsea’s prowess when a header from Nicolas Jackson was brilliantly saved on the line by Timothy Tillman.
Denis Bouanga responded with a chance of his own, cutting inside in a similar manner to Neto’s earlier goal, but saw his shot blocked at the near post by Robert Sánchez.
The Americans were left to regret that miss ten minutes from the end when Chelsea extended their lead. New signing Liam Delap, making his debut, provided a cross that Enzo Fernández met, firing it into the corner of the net.
Martínez did come close to netting a consolation goal for LAFC, but his low shot was effectively stopped by the steadfast Sánchez. Neto struck the crossbar with the final kick of the match, yet Chelsea made a strong statement in Group D, reinforcing their status as group favourites.
Next up is a challenging encounter against Flamengo, while Steve Cherundolo’s side prepares to face Esperance de Tunis.
