Manchester United icon Dwight Yorke has delivered a candid evaluation of the club’s current predicament, asserting that the ‘gifted’ squad lacks the necessary mentality to genuinely challenge Liverpool and other elite teams in the Premier League.
The Red Devils suffered a nightmarish 2024/25 season, finishing a dismal 15th in the Premier League, accumulating only 42 points from 38 games, marking their lowest league position in the past 51 years.
Aside from their struggles in the league, Ruben Amorim’s team also faced disappointment in the FA Cup and Carabao Cup. Their aspirations for silverware came to an abrupt end following a narrow 1-0 defeat to their rivals, Tottenham Hotspur, in the Europa League final.
Yorke expressed his frustration over his former side’s disappointing campaign, emphasising the urgent need for transformation at Old Trafford if the club is to reclaim its glory days.

“It’s hard to watch Manchester United in such a position, but that’s the reality for the club right now,” Yorke remarked.
“This season has been incredibly tough across the board; we must reflect and aim to come back stronger with renewed determination.”
“Finishing 15th in the league indicates something is seriously amiss. We need to reassess and start building for the future without delay.”
With European competitions off the table, Manchester United will face a much lighter schedule next season. They are set to begin their pre-season preparations with a friendly against arch-rivals Leeds United on July 19 at the Friends Arena in Stockholm, Sweden.
Lacking the Mental Edge Against Elite Clubs
Yorke underscored the fact that Manchester United is currently “well off the pace” when it comes to mounting a serious challenge against the reigning English champions Liverpool and other top competitors in the Premier League.
Once the powerhouse of English football, the Red Devils are now confronted with the task of reclaiming their rightful place amidst fierce competition.
When asked if the current squad possesses the mentality to go toe-to-toe with England’s top clubs, the Trinidad and Tobago coach succinctly replied, “I don’t believe so. They’re not part of that conversation at the moment.
“We need to focus on competing consistently. Only then can we assess where we stand. At the moment, we’re far behind the leading teams.”
‘Amorim Must Start Delivering Results’
Following the dismissal of Erik Ten Hag, Amorim was named as the club’s permanent manager, a decision that ignited considerable discussion among fans.
The Portuguese tactician inheriting a gifted yet inconsistent squad finds himself under significant pressure to deliver results at the iconic venue. Yorke was questioned about how much time the manager should be afforded to secure positive outcomes.
He responded, “I can’t specify an exact timeframe. What I know is that as a manager, you must win matches.
“Failing to secure victories makes your job increasingly difficult.
“Every manager needs to find a way to win games and achieve more consistency.
“If not, they risk creating a negative atmosphere around them.”

If he had the chance to alter anything during his time at Old Trafford, he noted: “First and foremost, I would require the right players.
“Without the suitable players, implementing new ideas becomes significantly challenging. There’s undeniable talent within the current squad.
“The focus must be on finding a strategy to secure victories.”
Yorke on Sunderland’s Return to the Premier League
After a successful stint at Manchester United, the former Trinidad and Tobago forward played for Blackburn Rovers, Birmingham City, and Sydney FC.
On August 31, 2006, he joined Sunderland FC, reuniting with ex-Red Devils colleague Roy Keane, who was at the helm of the Black Cats at that time. After hanging up his boots at the club, he took on the role of assistant manager at the Stadium of Light.
He shared his thoughts regarding Sunderland’s return to the Premier League after their triumph over Sheffield United in the play-off final, stating: “I’m truly thrilled for Sunderland.
“The teams that come down are well aware of what is required, so they must start strongly.”
