Salernitana’s battle for survival has descended into turmoil, as a case of food poisoning has left a significant portion of the squad hospitalised midway through their relegation clash with Sampdoria.
The Serie B outfit, striving to avoid a drop to Italy’s third tier, have officially requested a postponement for Friday’s second-leg fixture against Sampdoria, with both players and coaching staff still too unwell to engage in training.
The incident occurred during the flight back to Salerno after their 2-0 defeat in Genoa on Sunday, with 21 individuals from the squad and staff falling ill, many requiring hospitalisation upon arrival.
“We are truly astonished by the events that have transpired and the circumstances that threaten to disrupt Salernitana’s calm and focused approach in these final, pivotal moments of the season,” stated club CEO Maurizio Milan.
The widespread illness has left the southern Italian club in a state of competitive uncertainty, as they are unable to adequately prepare for a match that could have significant implications for their future in football.
After being relegated from Serie A last season, Salernitana now faces the alarming possibility of back-to-back relegations if they are unable to overturn their first-leg disadvantage.
“At this point, many players and staff are unable to even attend the training facility,” Milan noted.
The club has indicated that they have made informal inquiries to Serie B officials, who showed a “general willingness” to consider their request for a postponement.
Additionally, Salernitana is demanding an investigation into the “causes of this widespread and alarming incident.”
With the return leg set for Friday and a two-goal deficit already in play, there is pressing urgency for both the players’ recovery and the league authorities’ decision regarding potential extra time.
