As the final round approaches, Adam Scott stands as the sole competitor with a major championship title to his credit, a feat he accomplished back in 2013 at the Masters, triumphing over Ángel Cabrera in a dramatic playoff.
This Saturday in Oakmont, Scott delivered an impressive 3-under 67, bringing him to just one stroke off the lead. Notably, he also fired a 3-under 69 on the same course at Augusta.
The 44-year-old is fully aware of the challenge he faces. He’s the most seasoned player among the contenders, with his rivals consistently hitting the ball far beyond his range.
Since Phil Mickelson won the PGA Championship at 50 years old in 2021, no player over 40 has claimed a major title. Similarly, the last time a golfer over 40 won the US Open was with Payne Stewart’s victory in 1999.
However, only Scott possesses the memory of what it feels like to lift a major trophy.
Last year, Scott finished as a runner-up twice, including at the BMW Championship, but he hasn’t secured a top-10 finish in this current season.
“I’ve been hitting the ball better off the tee in the past month, and throughout my career, I’ve noticed that translates to improved performance across my game,” Scott remarked.
“I’m getting there gradually. I might not be at my peak yet, but it’s good to have some confidence as I head into tomorrow.”
Remarkably, this marks Scott’s 96th consecutive major championship appearance, the longest active streak and the second longest in history, behind Jack Nicklaus, who had an astonishing 146 straight.
The other four players sitting under par heading into the final round—Sam Burns, JJ Spaun, Viktor Hovland, and Carlos Ortiz—have a combined major-winning total of only 63.
