Finland’s aspirations of advancing to the knockout rounds of the UEFA European Under-21 Championship have taken a significant blow, as Ukraine secured a comfortable 2-0 victory in Kosice, rekindling their tournament ambitions following a loss in their opening match.
Fresh off earning their first-ever point in the tournament from a thrilling 2-2 draw against the Netherlands on Thursday, Finland was eager to continue their momentum towards a historic spot in the knockout stages.
However, they found themselves on the defensive for much of the first half. The Finns nearly fell behind early when goalkeeper Lucas Bergstrom was dispossessed in his own penalty area by Vladyslav Vanat, but fortunately for him, the ball trickled past the left post.
Shortly after, a long-range free-kick from Volodymyr Brazhko deflected off the wall, but Bergstrom responded brilliantly, tipping it onto the crossbar.
With Ukraine relentlessly applying pressure, they finally broke the deadlock just before the half-hour mark. Vanat’s initial shot from within the area was saved by Bergstrom, but the rebound fell perfectly for him, and his subsequent effort was too much to handle, finding the back of the net from close range.
Bergstrom made another outstanding save six minutes before half-time to deny Maksym Braharu at point-blank range, leaving Finland fortunate to only be trailing by a single goal at the break.
Despite being under intense pressure during the first half, the Little Eagle-Owls remained hopeful, knowing they were still in the game as long as the score remained close.
However, just four minutes after the second half commenced, their task became significantly harder when Vladyslav Veleten’s cross from the left into the area was poorly dealt with by the defence and Bergstrom, allowing Braharu to roll the ball into an unguarded net from just a few yards out.
After a VAR review, the goal was confirmed, delighting the Ukrainian side.
Chances for Finland were sparse, and they realised that their next scored opportunity would need to be converted to keep hopes alive. Unfortunately for them, Ville Koski’s header from a cross soared over the roof of the net, marking their closest effort as Ukraine managed the final moments to grab their first win of the tournament, moving them up to second place in Group D.
Finland now finds themselves at the bottom of the group with just one point ahead of their decisive match against Denmark on Wednesday, with their hopes of progression hanging by a thread.
