On Saturday, Marseille confirmed the signing of defender CJ Egan-Riley on a free transfer from Burnley.
“The 22-year-old English Under-21 international defender has joined the club following the successful completion of his medical examination,” stated the Ligue 1 club on their official website.
Egan-Riley developed in the youth ranks at Manchester City before making a move to Burnley. He enjoyed loan spells with Hibernian in Scotland and PSV Eindhoven before establishing himself as a key player for Burnley, contributing to their promotion to the Premier League last season. Notably, he was named in the Championship team of the season.
Marseille praised Egan-Riley for being “solid and composed during build-up play,” highlighting his “versatility and ability to operate both centrally and on the right side of defence.”
Currently, Egan-Riley is part of the England under-21 squad competing in the European Championship in Slovakia, where he remained an unused substitute in their title defence opener, which ended in a 3-1 victory over the Czech Republic.
This marks Marseille’s second signing of the summer, following the acquisition of fellow Englishman Angel Gomes, a midfielder who arrived from Lille.
The summer transfer window in France officially opens on Monday, following a preliminary 10-day window from June 1-10, which was linked to the Club World Cup.
