Filippo Inzaghi has parted ways with Pisa just weeks after leading the team to a momentous promotion to Serie A, the club confirmed on Friday.
In their announcement, Pisa stated that they had “mutually agreed to terminate” Inzaghi’s contract, which had two years remaining.
The 51-year-old former striker for Italy, AC Milan, and Juventus is set to continue his coaching career in the second division with Palermo.
According to Italian media, Palermo has forked out nearly a million euros to acquire Inzaghi, as the Sicilian club, owned by the City Football Group—also the parent company of Manchester City—aims for their own return to Serie A.
Under Inzaghi’s guidance, Pisa secured second place in Serie B, achieving promotion to the top tier for the first time in 34 years.
The Tuscan side, whose Arena Garibaldi stadium lies in the shadow of the iconic leaning tower of Pisa, ascended to Serie A alongside Sassuolo and Cremonese.
Alberto Gilardino, another 2006 World Cup winner with Italy, is among the candidates being considered to take over at Pisa, alongside Marco Giampaolo, who was recently dismissed from Lecce.
