Sydney FC has successfully captured the highly sought-after teenager Akol Akon from cross-town A-League rivals, Western Sydney Wanderers, in what is being hailed as a significant acquisition.
Regarded as “one of the brightest young talents in Australian football”, Akon has signed a three-year contract with the Sky Blues.
The 16-year-old forward gained attention earlier this year when he netted an incredible hat-trick during the Subway Joeys’ 4-0 victory over Saudi Arabia, accomplishing the feat at just 15 years of age.

“I’m really excited and thrilled to be here and embark on this new chapter,” Akon expressed.
“I admire how Sydney FC has nurtured players over the years; they’ve done exceptionally well, and I have a lot of respect for the club.”
“Honestly, the top goal for me is to make my debut—that would be a monumental milestone. I’m also keen on gaining significant minutes in the NPL to enhance my development; that’s crucial,” he added.
“In the next three years, I aspire to win the A-League with Sydney FC. That would be a remarkable achievement.”
“I’m genuinely looking forward to learning from both Joe Lolley and Douglas Costa, but I’m also inspired by the many talented players here.”

Sydney FC head coach Ufuk Talay commented, “Akol is an exhilarating young talent with tremendous potential.
“He possesses that natural instinct in the attacking third, along with the eagerness to take on defenders and create opportunities. Such qualities are rare in young players.”
“Though he’s still quite young, we see significant potential in his growth, and we’re committed to providing him with the necessary tools and environment to develop into a top-level professional.”
Akon joins Rhys Youlley as newcomers to Sydney FC ahead of the 2025-26 season, while Gus Hoefsloot, Alex Grant, and Wataru Kamijo have recommitted to the club following the departures of Patrick Klimala (end of loan), Andrew Redmayne, Jaushua Sotirio (end of loan), Jaiden Kucharski, and Max Burgess.
