Jack Grealish’s position at Manchester City has come under increased scrutiny following his exclusion from Pep Guardiola’s squad for the upcoming Club World Cup.
Although City has announced a squad of 27 players from a potential 35 for the tournament commencing in the United States on June 14th, Grealish has been left out, alongside former club captain Kyle Walker.
Interestingly, all four of City’s new signings this week—Rayan Ait-Nouri, Rayan Cherki, Tijani Reijnders, and Marcus Bettinelli—have made the cut.
In addition, Ballon d’Or winner Rodri is part of the squad after making a successful return from a long-term knee injury that sidelined him towards the end of the Premier League season.
Grealish, who holds the record as City’s most expensive signing following his £100 million transfer from Aston Villa in 2021, has been relegated in the pecking order over the past two years.
During the 2024/25 season, he managed only seven starts in the Premier League and was notably left on the bench during City’s recent 1-0 defeat against Crystal Palace in the FA Cup final.

The 29-year-old still has two years remaining on his contract at City, and his reported wages of £300,000 per week present a challenge for any potential buyers.
Guardiola indicated last month that he might depart the club if the squad size isn’t reduced before the start of the new season.
Grealish is believed to be among several players who could leave, along with Walker.
The 35-year-old defender spent the latter half of last season on loan at AC Milan, but the Serie A club has opted not to exercise their purchase option.
City’s Club World Cup journey kicks off against Moroccan side Wydad Casablanca in Philadelphia next Wednesday, followed by group matches against Al Ain from Abu Dhabi and Juventus.
