Manchester City have secured the signing of attacking midfielder Rayan Cherki from Olympique Lyonnais on a five-year contract as they prepare for this month’s Club World Cup, announced the Premier League club on Tuesday.
While the financial specifics of the agreement remain confidential, reports from the UK suggest that City invested approximately 40 million euros in acquiring the 21-year-old French talent.
Cherki enjoyed a standout season with Lyon in 2024-25, netting 12 goals and assisting 20 others across all competitions.
“This is a dream come true for me. Honestly, joining a club like Manchester City and having the chance to take the next step in my career is incredibly special,” Cherki expressed in a statement.
“I’ve dedicated my life to this moment. My passion for this sport is immense, and I am eager to further my development here in Manchester under Pep (Guardiola) and his coaching team.
“Leaving Lyon was a decision I made only for a project I truly believe in, and everything about City indicates that I can enhance my game and contribute to the team’s success in the future. I’m excited to show the City fans what I’m capable of.”
The recently capped French international, who can operate as both an attacking midfielder and a right winger, scored in both legs of his team’s Europa League quarter-final, which ended in a 7-6 aggregate defeat to Manchester United.
City will commence their Club World Cup journey on June 18th against Moroccan club Wydad AC, followed by clashes with Emirati side Al Ain and Juventus.
