On Tuesday, Claudio Ranieri confirmed he has declined the opportunity to take on the vacant role of Italy’s national team manager, following the dismissal of Luciano Spalletti, and will continue his affiliation with AS Roma as a senior advisor.
Spalletti, the former Napoli coach, aged 66, announced his departure on Sunday after Italy suffered a heavy 3-0 defeat to Norway in their opening World Cup qualifier last Friday.
Ranieri, who recently stepped away from management for the second time after his tenure with Roma last season, expressed his gratitude for the offer extended by Gabriele Gravina, President of the Italian Football Federation.
“I thank President Gravina for this opportunity; it is a tremendous honour. However, after careful consideration, I have chosen to fully dedicate myself to my new role at Roma,” he stated to the Italian news agency ANSA.
“The Friedkins, the owners of Roma, have provided me with their unwavering support regarding my decision about the national team, but ultimately, the choice is mine to make.”
Ranieri played a pivotal role in guiding Roma to a fifth-place finish in Serie A last season, securing their spot in the Europa League. The 73-year-old now sees former Atalanta manager Gian Piero Gasperini step into the managerial role at Roma.
