Malaysia’s Prime Minister has taken a swipe at Manchester United, hinting that the club could face relegation next season after witnessing the once-great Premier League team booed off the pitch in Kuala Lumpur.
Ruben Amorim’s disheartened squad experienced a dismal 1-0 loss to a Southeast Asian XI in front of more than 70,000 fans in the Malaysian capital on Wednesday.
This disappointing performance follows United’s lacklustre finish in 15th place in the league, marking one of their worst seasons in recent years without a trophy to their name.
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim was present at Bukit Jalil National Stadium and couldn’t resist delivering a cheeky comment post-match.
“Oh no! Manchester United has failed to lift a trophy again. Looks like you’re in for a ‘headache’ next season,” Anwar posted on Facebook.
“Let’s hope you don’t drop down to the Championship,” he added, referencing England’s second division.
Amorim’s team is set to face the Hong Kong side on Friday in their second and final fixture of the Asian post-season tour.
The friendly match at the 40,000-capacity Hong Kong Stadium had not yet sold out as of the day before the event.
