Authorities have been granted additional time to interrogate a 53-year-old man detained on suspicion of attempted murder following an incident where a car collided with football fans during Liverpool’s Premier League victory parade.
Merseyside Police provided an update on Wednesday, increasing the count of injured individuals from 65 to 79 after identifying “more people who were hurt.”
Seven individuals are still receiving treatment in hospital after being struck by a Ford Galaxy on Water Street shortly after 6 pm on Monday.
The police stated that the suspect, a white male from West Derby, can be questioned until Thursday after his arrest on charges including attempted murder, dangerous driving, and operating a vehicle while unfit due to drugs.
Following the incident, the street where the collision occurred has been reopened to both traffic and pedestrians after the police cordon was removed.
As per regulations regarding detention, police are permitted to hold an individual in custody for a maximum of 24 hours without charge, with a superintendent having the authority to extend this by an additional 12 hours.
After this initial period, an application can be made to a magistrates’ court for a further extension of 12 hours, up to a total of 96 hours.
In cases related to terrorism, a suspect can be detained for up to 14 days without charge; however, authorities have indicated that this incident is not being treated as terrorism-related.
‘Significant progress’
Merseyside Police reported on Wednesday that “significant progress” has been made in “establishing the full circumstances that led to the incident,” urging the public to avoid speculation.
They also requested that individuals refrain from disseminating distressing content online.
Detective Superintendent Rachel Wilson remarked: “I’m gratified to say that the number of individuals in hospital is decreasing as they continue to recover from this tragic event.”
“We are dedicated to supporting those still undergoing treatment, and as part of our ongoing inquiries, we are identifying additional victims of the incident.”
“The response from many of those who were present on that day has been remarkable, and I want to express my gratitude for their cooperation in our investigation.”
“I encourage anyone who has not yet contacted the police with information regarding this incident to do so,” she emphasised.
