Zinedine Zidane, who is being heavily considered in France to succeed as the national coach following the 2026 World Cup, expressed that the role would be “a dream” and that he is “eagerly anticipating” the opportunity.
The 52-year-old made these comments at an event on Monday hosted by his long-time sponsors, Adidas, according to reports from French media.
“I believe I am well-suited for the French team, having played for almost 12, 13, 14 years. Naturally, it’s a dream come true. I’m really looking forward to it,” Zidane stated, the former captain of Les Bleus who famously scored twice during their victory in the 1998 World Cup final.
His teammate in that memorable match and during France’s Euro 2000 success was Didier Deschamps, who has been at the helm of the French side since 2012.
Deschamps led Les Bleus to World Cup glory in 2018 but has confirmed he will step down following the 2026 World Cup, which will be hosted across the USA, Canada, and Mexico.
During his coaching career, Zidane guided Real Madrid to three Champions League titles and two La Liga championships, although he has not taken on a coaching role since concluding his second stint in the Spanish capital in 2021.
