Matthew Lloyd has identified three significant gaps in Carlton’s roster, which he believes contribute to their lack of perceived strength as a premiership contender for 2025.
Currently, the Blues find themselves outside the top eight at their bye, having suffered defeats to both an undermanned GWS and Sydney teams over the past fortnight.
While their disposal efficiency going forward has faced considerable scrutiny, Lloyd contends that the quality of their players is also subpar.
“In my view, they have three major deficiencies in their list. One of those is the running backs, which are crucial in today’s game. If Adam Saad is their best option, I wouldn’t place him in the top 15 players overall,” Lloyd remarked during his appearance on Nine’s Footy Classified.

“I’m not sure if that issue lies with the coaching staff or with Adam Saad himself. That’s one area to improve.
“Next, they need a better running midfielder. For instance, the Bulldogs have plenty, as do Brisbane. If Sam Walsh is their top midfielder, I wouldn’t rank him among the top 25 or 30 players in the league right now.”
“Finally, when it comes to small forwards, some teams boast three exceptional players, but none at Carlton are performing at the AFL standard.”

Lloyd further emphasised the need for more from two-time Coleman Medallist Charlie Curnow.
“I don’t believe Charlie Curnow is putting in as much effort as he should,” Lloyd commented.
“Their stats reveal eight players among the worst for inside 50 kicks in the league. That’s a significant issue. When Charlie is being outplayed, he tends to give in too easily, especially compared to champions like Jeremy Cameron and Jesse Hogan.”
Damian Barrett shared that Graham Wright’s move to club CEO will now take place in July instead of October, reflecting the early challenges faced by the club.
As Carlton approaches their bye week, they will be looking to turn their fortunes around in the second half of the season, much like they did in 2023.
