Juventus clinched their spot in next season’s Champions League on the final day of the Serie A campaign this past Sunday, yet manager Igor Tudor remains unsure about his future at the club. He has expressed a desire for a resolution before the Club World Cup kicks off.
Tudor stepped in to replace the dismissed Thiago Motta in March and signed a contract that runs until the end of the current season. The club holds an option to extend his contract for an additional year if they secured a Champions League berth, which becomes mandatory after July 30.
A thrilling 3-2 victory over Venezia ensured Juventus finished fourth in the league standings. With Juventus set to participate in the Club World Cup, commencing on June 14 in the United States, Tudor was pressed on whether he’d still be at the helm by that time.
“With the World Cup approaching, everything will be sorted out before then,” Tudor told Sky Sports.
“It wouldn’t be wise to head there without clarity, or to decide on a new manager but then take the same coach along; it wouldn’t be fair to either myself or the club.
“A decision on the future will be made prior to the World Cup, and I believe that’s the right approach.”
Despite the lingering uncertainty, Tudor takes satisfaction in the work he has done at Juventus since taking over.
“I’m pleased; it’s wonderful as we’ve accomplished something, but you must accept the reality of being a coach. You’re always on the edge,” Tudor noted.
“If we hadn’t won today, my feelings wouldn’t have changed; I’d still feel like the same coach. Naturally, winning brings a bit more joy.”
Although Tudor may not be at the helm next season, he shared his thoughts on what the club needs to do to compete for the league title.
“First and foremost, we need depth; in every match I’ve overseen, we’ve had at least two starters missing,” he said.
“Juventus require two or three specifically targeted signings, players who can offer experience. To secure trophies, you ideally want an average squad age of 26 or 27. I’m not making this up. “We are somewhat inexperienced, but there’s talent, and I’m convinced that with a solid effort and two or three key signings, we can succeed.”
