Luke Shaw, defender for Manchester United, stated that he and his teammates must question their suitability to represent the renowned English club following a defeat in the Europa League final to Tottenham, which capped off a disappointing season.
Tottenham broke a 17-year trophy drought with a hard-fought 1-0 victory in Bilbao, courtesy of Brennan Johnson’s strike, after Shaw struggled to clear a cross.
Currently positioned 16th in the Premier League, United will miss out on European competition entirely next season for only the second time in 35 years.
“For a club of Manchester United’s stature, this is simply unacceptable,” Shaw remarked.
“I believe it’s essential for me, and for all of us, to ask ourselves tonight whether we are good enough to be here. This season has not been acceptable for this club.”
The loss intensifies the scrutiny on manager Ruben Amorim, who has struggled to make a positive impact on results since his appointment in November.
The Portuguese coach joins a list of highly regarded managers who have found it challenging in the Old Trafford role since Alex Ferguson’s retirement in 2013.
Shaw expressed his support for United’s manager, insisting that the accountability should rest with the players rather than Amorim.
“There are numerous areas that require change. That’s why I firmly believe Ruben is the right person for the job,” Shaw continued.
“He understands, observes, and identifies everything day in and day out at the club, both on and off the pitch, including the standards and mindset.
“I think he is fully aware of what needs to be addressed.”
